Cover Me Slowly

London planning and lazy days and the lack of imagination and inspiration to be found in the ol' hometown have left me starved for words and writing this past month. BUT never look back, never surrender and blah blah blah, so let's jump this engine and see what's ticking on the internetz....

--------------------------------------

Cool Runnings are an eight piece from Knoxville, Tennessee who gyrate their way through several different stylings throughout their awesomely titled tracks. 'Burnout' drums along, sinister and heady, whilst 'Babes Forever' gets glitchy and angular and 'When I Got High With You' sounds as stoned and sleepy as implied.

However, this is all about the fabled art of the COVER! And here Cool Runnings take on 'Road To Nowhere', the Talking Heads' choral uttering on the lack of direction in life. Perfect for a band without one specific musical direction so far (which works well as far as the smorgasbord of sound emitted shows).

Cool Runnings throw some tribal drums on the song, whinny out the vocals and bring out the nihilism of the whole thing, dashing bits of archaic synth and communal singing into the mix. A delightfully offtrack take on the 1985 Byrne creation.

New Year = New Music.....

Silence is the fabric upon which the notes are woven. ~Lawrence Duncan

Time for a buncha artists for you to absorb, assimilate and idolise....

Kid Cudi is an artist who is now getting some airplay here, there and everywhere. He is a Cleveland rapper whose new single, 'Day N Nite', is a song that sticks to the sides if your brain, thanks to an infectious chorus. His debut album is currently being prepped for a release in Spring 2009.

Say Hi (To Your Mom), as well as having an awesome band name, have a seething sound that is set to penetrate the consciousness of 2009. They have been around since 2002 but not reached the fame they deserve though the stage may be set for their new record 'Oohs and Aahs' to reach that wider audience they deserve.

Riding the new electro-pop wave is Little Boots, a glamorous new icon for the electro age. 'Stuck on Repeat', her first single, is a pulsating, pop nugget with a synth line that makes you want to dance on a bartop. Produced by Joe Goddard of Hot Chip, his genius for electronic riffs and pop sensibility shine through on pretty much every track she creates.

I am also loving Lily Allen's new song, 'The Fear'. I was never a big fan of her first album, it was catcy and decent, but those were the only two words I could think of to describe it. But her new song has a gentle melancholy and softly, carefully strung lyrics that combine well to form a sweet little pop song.

And here is just a random selection of new artists to keep an eye on...

The groovy funk beats of Magistrates, who combine the drums and riffs of Talking Heads with Prince-like vocals.

The sampling genius of Passion Pit, alongside their high, emphatic vocals and incessant yet catchy riffs.

Fight Like Apes bring a mixture of shoegazing, indie and electronica to craft a music that grasps the heart and shuffles the feet simulataneously.

That is all for today, on the eve that Santa prepares his presents for us all!! Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year! Lets hope for many, many, many more genius musical crafts, creations and constructions in 2009!
